Three options for entrance trials for soccer academies
There are three main types of entrance trials for soccer academies – summer camps, one week as a student programs, and day trials. Some academies are more flexible than others regarding entrance trials offering full academy trial programs and day trials all year round. Other academies hold trials on a few specific dates throughout the year. Fortunately, all four soccer academies offer summer camps which serve as tryouts for the full-year programs. You can read more about entrance trials for soccer academies below.
1. Summer camps
2. Full academy trial programs
3. Day trials
1. Summer camps as entrance trials for soccer academies
All high performance academies offer intensive summer camps for talented players from June until August. The summer camps at high performance academies serve as entrance trials for the full-year professional soccer player training programs at the academies.
Summer camps are highly recommended for entrance trials for soccer academies for three reasons:
- A two-week summer camp gives coaches ample time to evaluate the players’ skills and character to determine whether or not they have what it takes to attend a full-year program. Two weeks is more than enough time to demonstrate that you have what it takes to attend the full-year program as a full-time student.
- Summer camps give players the chance to get to know the academy, the personnel, and the facilities so that they can decide whether or not they’d really like to attend the academy as a full-time student. Attending a soccer academy full-time is a great opportunity but also a great investment. It’s extremely beneficial to get to know the academy, the staff, the training methodology and style, the coaches, etc. before you commit to a year-long program.
- Summer camps are fun! Even if, in the end, you decide not to attend a full-year program, two-weeks away from home at a high performance training camp is both fun and productive. You’ll have the opportunity to meet talented players from all over the world and make life-long friendships. Not to mention, two weeks of training at a high performance training camp is guaranteed to improve your performance on the soccer field.
*Most of these summer camps are also open to soccer players who do NOT wish to attend the academy full time. Many young players attend simply to improve their skills and meet other talented players from all over the world. The high performance academy in Valencia, however, provides a summer camp especially designed for players seeking entrance to the program. They also offer a summer camp affiliated with FC Porto for players who are not interested in the full-year program.
2. Full academy trial programs as entrance trials for soccer academies
Like summer camps, the full academy trial programs last for one or two weeks and serve as entrance trials for the full-year professional soccer player training programs at the academies. Unlike summer camps, however, they take place during the academic year, which means players get the chance to train with current full-year academy students and experience what life would be like as a full-time student at the academy.
The full academy trial programs vary slightly from one academy to the next. Some academies, like the high performance academy in Barcelona, and the high performance academy in the UK are extremely flexible with their starting dates and offer very personalized programs. Other academies, like the high performance academy in Valencia, offer specific starting dates in April and May when students can participate in a full academy trial program. Regardless, these entrance trials offer the same overall benefits for the students.
Soccer players who attend full academy trial programs get the chance to experience exactly what life would be like as an academy student. Students meet their future teammates and classmates and train with them on the pitch during typical training hours. They live in the same residence, eat the same foods, etc.
Students at these programs receive more personalized coaching and attention than participants at summer camps for two reasons. First, fewer participants attend these programs, so coaches can pay more attention to each participant both in terms of evaluating their skills and in terms of offering advice to improve their performance.
Secondly, coaches know that every soccer player who participates in a full academy trial program is highly considering joining the academy as a full-time student. This means, coaches know that they’re not wasting time evaluating students who aren’t even considering attending the academy as full-time students.
These full academy trial programs tend to cost between 1,000€ – 2,000€ per week. For more information about the specific full academy trial programs that each high performance academy offers, visit the links below:
3. Trial days as entrance trials for soccer academies
The high performance academies also offer trial days as entrance trials for the full-year professional soccer player training programs for players who cannot attend a summer camp or a full academy trial program. Trial days last for one to three days depending on the specific high performance academy in question.
These day trials are the least recommended option as tryouts for the academies. One to three days is often not enough time for coaches to evaluate players’ performance. Players are often understandably nervous during their first few days in front of coaches and, therefore, don’t begin really demonstrating their abilities until the third day of their training. In some cases, players don’t perform up to their standards until it’s too late, and coaches have already made their decision.
Additionally, trial days don’t allow students the chance to experience life as a full-time academy student. Neither students nor parents have time to really evaluate the academy and decide whether a full year at the academy would be worth the investment. For these reasons, summer camps and full academy trial programs are always recommended before trial days.
Nevertheless, students who have attending trial days as entrance trials for soccer academies have been accepted into these academies and have come to find that spending a year or more as a full-time student at a high performance academy is well worth the investment. So, for students who are unable to join a summer camp or a full academy trial program, attending trial days is a good option for entering a soccer academy.
