Many basketball enthusiasts who enjoy the sport, both on and off the court, dream of building a career as a basketball coach and eventually working in the field they love. There are many ways to become a good basketball coach, but all of them require earning a coaching certification that proves you are qualified to train young players.
There are four different levels of training that teach students both the tactical and practical aspects of basketball as well as the managerial and leadership skills that every good coach must possess. These courses are offered by both the Regional Basketball Federations and the Spanish Basketball Federation, and the total duration—if you wish to complete the full “coaching career”—is about three years. After completing all these levels, the coach obtains the necessary certification to lead teams competing in the ACB League.
Level 0 Basketball Coaching Course
Those who obtain this certificate can teach basic basketball classes focused on introducing and teaching beginners the sport through basic drills and games. Both Regional Federations and basketball clubs offer these types of courses periodically, which typically last about 60 hours.
To enroll in one of these courses, you must meet two requirements:
- Be at least 16 years old
- Have completed secondary school (ESO ) or its equivalent.
Level 1 Basketball Coach Course

This course is designed for anyone who wants to train as a coach for youth basketball, mini-basketball, and school-level competition basketball. As with Level 0, these courses may also be offered by Regional and Provincial Federations, as well as by various clubs. To enroll, you do not need to have completed Level 0, but you must meet certain requirements:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Have completed high school, ESO, or equivalent.
Level 2 Basketball Coaching Course
With this intermediate-level course , the coach is now prepared to train older players and lead teams in all provincial and regional categories. This course is also offered periodically by Regional and Provincial Basketball Federations, and the admission requirements are more stringent:
- Be 18 years old.
- Have completed ESO or equivalent.
- Hold a Level 1 Basketball Coach Certification.

Level 3 Advanced Basketball Coaching License
The Level 3 Advanced License is the highest official certification. In this case, the Spanish Basketball Federation itself offers this course, and it certifies that the individual meets the requirements to coach professional teams at the EBA League or ACB League level. It lasts a total of approximately 750 hours, of which 200 are dedicated to practical training at clubs and 75 to the final project.
To enroll in these courses, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Hold a Level 2 certification.
If you’re thinking about becoming a basketball coach, it’s always good to hear from a coach who has achieved the dream you currently have. So here’s an interview we conducted a few months ago with Pablo Pin, coach of Fundación CB Granada, who spoke to us about his experience both on and off the court.
