If simply playing golf isn’t enough for you and you want to share your passion for the sport and teach others the secrets to becoming a good golfer, one of the best ways to do so is by training to become a golf coach.
Courses to become a golf coach are offered by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, and they train students not only in the theoretical and practical aspects of golf but also in teaching methods, management, and leadership skills, preparing them to teach players at all levels—from beginners to advanced and elite competition.
Depending on their content and the type of players they are intended to train, the courses are divided into three different levels:
Beginner Technical Instructor Course – Level 1:
This course certifies individuals to train beginners by teaching them the technical and practical fundamentals of the sport. It also qualifies them to assist with the day-to-day operations of golf facilities. The course lasts approximately 300 hours—6 to 7 months—of which about 150 hours are dedicated to practical training.
To be eligible for this golf instructor course, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Provide proof of completion of ESO or equivalent
- Hold a valid Federation License
- Have a handicap of 4.4 or lower, or hold Professional Golf Player status.
- Pass a technical-practical selection test (only if the number of applicants exceeds the number of available spots).
Advanced Coach Course – Level 2:
Level 2 leads to the Sports Coach Certification in Golf and Pitch & Putt. It is designed for individuals who wish to assist in the technical development and refinement of golfers’ skills, as well as coordinate all types of activities conducted at golf facilities. The course lasts approximately 540 hours—about 9 months—of which about 200 are practical training hours. In this case, the admission requirements differ from those mentioned above:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Have completed secondary school (ESO) or its equivalent
- Have completed the Level 1 Course, or hold the rank of Golf Instructor or Assistant Golf Instructor
High-Performance Technician Course – Level 3:
At this final level, students earn the Advanced Sports Technician Certificate in Golf and Rules of Golf. Those holding this certificate are qualified to coach high-performance and competitive players, as well as manage the entire sports operations of a golf facility and lead golf schools and clubs. The course lasts 610 hours, with over 200 hours of practical sessions, and to pass the course, students must submit a final project. The total duration of the course is typically approximately twelve months.
The requirements for admission to Level 3 are:
- Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Have successfully completed the Level 2 Course, or hold the rank of Assistant Instructor or Golf Instructor.
